Get Off Easy, the latest full length from Canadian sleaze rockers Savage Henry and the Infamous One Pounders, comes off about as graceful and well-timed as a fart joke in a wedding speech. I suppose the cover art, a greasy sausage dipped into a glass of whiskey on the rocks, should have been fair warning. Obviously, an album like this isn’t meant to be taken seriously but it’s still hard to ignore the awkward timing of this “joke” that’s been told a million times before yet needs to be told again while rape culture is more apparent than it’s ever been.
To their credit, whatever that’s worth, Savage Henry and the Infamous One Pounders don’t start off as anything close to the tasteless and tired “rape rock” of bands like The Mentors. Initially, everything seems consensual. Even lines like “a big mama needs a big big dick like a big big dog needs a big big stick” aren’t necessarily rape-y, but the record seems to take an unintentionally darker turn around “Tits or GTFO” with leering lines such as “they look so young and firm and round” and the reinforcement of the title “show me your tits or get the fuck out.” This stretches through the unfortunately titled (on an album of unfortunate titles) “Slut Attack” and “I Want More” to the nauseating “Sex Craze” featuring lines like “Just bite the pillow, baby, ‘cause I’m going in dry” and “I hope there’s ice in your freezer because you’re going to be sore.” Haha?
The music really brings nothing notable to the table with an aping of Ramones’ “I Don’t Wanna Go Down to the Basement” punctuating the typically charming “Beatin’ Off” making the album’s high point. The record is thankfully short though a singular tone makes it drag. If for some reason you’d actually want to catch Savage Henry and the Infamous One Pounders live, you’ll have plenty of opportunities in Western Canada. You should probably bring some pepper spray.
