Los Angeles club night Synthgasm seems to leave little to the imagination with its brazen moniker and maybe that’s one of the reasons it’s so full of surprises. On May 26, the club with a name that makes you sound like a pervert from the year 2069 may actually bring about the apocalypse as the trinity of Stallengrad, Mr. 666, and Gel Set take turns blessing and damning the stage of the Mime in Echo Park, Los Angeles. Magic Monster Radio will be on hand to live stream armageddon for as long as they can survive.
Comrade Stallen quickly made a name for himself as the promoter of LA’s Subversion and is teaming up with Bloody Mess’s Meghan Edwards to bring this third installation of Synthgasm, a night devoted to synth-based music. Stallen’s own project Stallengrad promises a climax to the night (pun unfortunately intended), bringing synth-driven black metal, or as Stallen himself calls it “black disco”, to a boil and leaving the crowd dancing like an exorcism gone wrong. Not since Frankie Goes to Hollywood’s Welcome to the Pleasuredome (not joking) has synth-based music seemed so urgently epic. Often adorned in the horns of a ram and creeping across the venue with an unholier-than-thou attitude, Stallen is a frightening sight and sound, dragging his tongue across the skinned head of a goat while screeching battle cries seldom heard outside of a black forest nightmare. Audiences are highly advised to dress for a messy apocalypse. At a recent show, a young lady at the front danced vacantly, oblivious to the fact that a genuine rotting goat tongue was sliding down her leg; a sight that would have surely given Vice magazine a synthgasm.
Initial shocks come courtesy of Chicago-based Mr. 666 and his atmospheric electronic soundscapes, obviously highly influenced by synthetic film scores of the ’70s and ’80s. A few minutes in to his songs and you’d imagine he sees waiting in line to ride Space Mountain at Disneyland as a holy pilgrimage. Likewise Chicago natives Gel Set herald Synthgasm’s rapture with twin ethereal vocals like a wired, despondent angel wrapping its legs around a freezing cold mirror while confiding in her own echo, unphased by the hint of something sinister in the burbling synth lines.
The doomsday events are mediated by the evening’s DJs, Bloody Mess’s Miss M.E. and the sexy mannequin duo of Violet Tremors providing a little wax on wax action. Synthgasm pries open the gates of Heaven and Hell at 9:00PM PST this Saturday May 26 and Magic Monster Radio begins a worldwide live broadcast of the events at 9:45PM PST so regardless of your location, you’ll be kept up to date on the developing apocalypse. Isn’t it fitting that the battle for the end of the world takes place in the city of angels?
